Genco Gulan

contemporary conceptual visual artist

who defines his practices in painting, sculpture, ceramics, performance, photography, video and new media as ‘idea art’. Gulan was born in Istanbul in 1969. He received his first prize from BP in 1993. He got the New School scholarship in 2000, took part in the team that won EMAF 2005, and was awarded Master Artist at Ege Art Prize in 2015. His works are presented in museums such as Centre Pompidou Paris, Pera, ZKM, MAM Rio de Janeiro, La Triennale di Milano, Ankara Resim Heykel Museum, MoMUS Thessaloniki and Museum Oswald Dortmund. He participated in festivals such as Steirishes Herbst, Ars Electronica, Mediaterra, prog-me, Balkan Art Novi Sad, Roaming Tehran, Bonn Biennial an Kommagene Biennial. His performances were presented at Istanbul Theatre, PAP Tel Aviv, Wunderbar New Castle, Fringe New York, Moving Silence Athens and Accente Festival Duisburg. He is in collections such as Rhizome.org at the New Museum, Istanbul Modern, Elgiz, Baksi, Museum Oswald, Davis Museum, State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki and Imago Mundi Luciano Benetton. His works are listed as required reading at City University, Rice University and University of California Santa Barbara. Gulan gave conferences at Yale, SVA, Köln, Bilgi, NYIT and Incheon University. He was in the Advisory Board of Balkan Biennial Cosmopolis and the International Programming Committee of ISEA Singapore. He is the founder of the istanbumuseum.org and the Web Biennial. He taught at Mimar Sinan Academy and Bogazici University. He lives and works in Izmir and Istanbul.
